Alongside a stellar lineup of Prabal Gurung, Thomas Tait and Oscar de la Renta – Ong Shunmugam became the youngest Singapore label to stage its own show at the Audi Fashion Festival when it presented Madness & Civilisation on May 16 2014.
The Fall/Winter 2014 collection of contemporary cheongsam premiered to a packed tent and overwhelmingly positive response. Spotted lining the front row was Steven Kolb, CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and fellow industry icons Tjin Lee, Tracy Phillips, Resham Melwani and Paige Parker.
“The loudest cheers heard during the 2014 Audi Fashion Festival were for Ong Shunmugam as it made its first solo runway show at the annual fashion showcase in Singapore’s Orchard Road.”

“The tent was packed to the rafters in support for hometown designer Priscilla Shunmugam. With an unwavering commitment to construction excellence (and an acute eye for cut and form), Shunmugam paraded elegant reinterpretations of the traditional Chinese qipao… alongside more modern pieces outifitted with daring and colourful prints. Hands down, one of Singapore’s best talents.”

“…the lawyer-turned-designer’s fall/winter 2014 debut at AFF was evidence of her growing understanding of fabrications and new silhouettes while still keeping to her signature Asian-inspired prints.”

“Minutes before the lights went on at the Ong Shunmugam Fall/Winter 2014 show… the sense of anticipation was palpable. The question on everyone’s mind: “Can designer Priscilla Shunmugam deliver yet another stunning collection?” And by the end of the show, the answer was clear: yes, she can and she certainly did.”

“Ong Shunmugam wins the Grand Award at the Design for Asia Awards 2013!
Against the odds of 900 entries across 18 design categories from 19 countries. The beauty of this is manifold but clarifies something for me: I believe we are ready to let go of the condescension we have for the things we make; I think we are capable of defining our own modernity beyond what has schooled it; I am certain that we are tired of not knowing the depths of our origins. Ong Shunmugam is a project driven not by pride and exclusiveness, but by the yearning to let what we feel deep in our bones clothe our skin.
I share this with all of you!”

Today is Atelier Ong Shunmugam’s 2nd Anniversary!
It’s been 2 years since we first pitched this humble little tent, but just look at it today.
The best part of the shop that isn’t pictured here is the roomful of support that has come our way from our customers who have shown that yes, it is possible and in fact, very fashionable to be proud owners of original and homegrown design.
So on Friday, 8th November 2013 we celebrate Atelier Ong Shunmugam’s Birthday Party with a little champagne, a lot of cake and by giving everyone 10% off (20% off for Members) storewide! Join us at the Atelier anytime between 12pm and 7pm. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday, 11th November.

Designer Priscilla Shunmugam has been nominated for The President’s Design Award 2013 in the Designer Of The Year category! We’ve pieced together the Ong Shunmugam portfolio and a bunch of supporting documents for submission to the jury – the rest is out of our hands. The President’s Design Award is Singapore’s highest honour accorded to designers and designs across all disciplines. It “honours the significant achievements and contributions of the nation’s design talents and is awarded to designers who have pushed the envelope to make a significant difference to the community through design that improves the quality of life.”

Biggest news of the month – Ong Shunmugam will show at Singapore’s Audi Fashion Festival 2013 on 18 May. Presented by Future Fashion Now and Parco Japan, we will debut Fall/Winter 2013 alongside Japanese designer Jun Okamoto at the Tent @ Marina Promenade. It’s worth noting that Ong Shunmugam did not emerge from any local incubator programme or design school, making this our debut presentation at the Festival and we are really thrilled to be joining this year’s incredible line up of Hussein Chalayan, Peter Pilotto and Carolina Herrera (amongst others). Come and support us!

If this wall could talk, it would tell you the stories of women who endured a different world. If this wall could talk, it would bring together expressions from identities varied and lives disconnected. If this wall could talk, it would confirm how old fashion was so ahead of its time.
If this wall could talk, it would show you a legacy of mothers who have left behind better things, most of all us.

Come March 15th, the five national museums of Singapore will come together to hold Heritage Gala 2013 at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia. Themed Legacies, the Gala is a fundraising platform which will see the President of Singapore, Tony Tan, as the Guest-Of-Honour amongst 600 guests representing the country’s social, business and civic sectors.
In February, Ong Shunmugam became by far, the youngest brand invited to participate in the Gala’s silent auction. We’re putting forth a donation that comprises the experience of a bespoke cheongsam from start to finish; with the amount raised from the winning bid supporting the National Museum of Singapore’s various programmes and exhibitions.

Ong Shunmugam is especially proud to announce that we recently signed the lease for another unit at Hong Leong Building in downtown Singapore.
That’s right. Barely a year and a half after launching Atelier Ong Shunmugam, we will open our second store this April, allowing us more legroom to grow and run our retail functions a little better.
